It is the consignor's responsibility to check whether toys and equipment have been recalled before bringing them to the sale. You can do that by going to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website at http://www.cpsc.gov/ and going to “Recalls and Product Safety News” to search their records to see if your items have been recalled.
Recalled items may NOT be sold at The Friendship Closet. It is against the law to knowingly sell recalled items. It is up to the Reseller (which is the consignor, not The Friendship Closet) to make sure items at the sale are not recalled.
The Friendship Closet will not be checking for recalls, just as eBay and Craigslist do not check each item that is posted on their site. We can not stress enough the importance for the consignors to check to make sure they are not selling recalled items.
Shoppers: If you see a recalled item on our sales floor, notify a volunteer immediately so we may remove it. All sales are final. We do not accept returns or exchanges for any reason so please consider your purchases carefully.
Regarding lead testing, the CPSC clearly says that Resellers are NOT responsible for lead testing. If you would like to take a look at their suggestions, please check out http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/thrift/thrguid.pdf . Remember, these are suggestions, not requirements. The only requirement is to not sell recalled items.
6/11/11 Update: Due to the widespread recall on cribs and change in manufacturing regulations, we are no longer accepting cribs. Portable (pack-n-play style) cribs are fine.
For frequently asked questions about recalls, go to http://www.cpsc.gov/about/faq.html#rec. We encourage all parents to follow the directions listed on that page to join the recall e-mail subscription list to receive CPSC's recall notices automatically the same day they issue them.
For clarification of the 2009 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), go to http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09086.html.
6/19/12 Update: Due to regulations regarding mattresses and box springs, we are no longer accepting mattresses. More information may be found at http://www.ncagr.gov/SPCAP/sleep/index.htm.
